11/1-30 classnotes

11-30-11
  Handed out Creatve Assignment #2--Human vs Machine/Alien Interaction. Saw short clips of ideas for project.
 Journal:  Loop writing.  !. Do all siblings fight; yes/no, give examples and explain.  2. Do you, or would you, fight  with your siblings and why.  3. Explain in writing, drawing, diagram Ender’s relationship with his siblings.

  Read pgs. 37-53 and get vocab words.11-29-11
    Went over the calender.  Discussion:    What’s the difference ?
  Android-racism-no difference.  What’s a problem w/ them on earth?  Suspension of disbelief.  Ender’s Game:
    Monitor in base of neck--distant future--dystopic--only two children-third by permission only--buggers.  Read from book starting on pg. 16.

Some of the ideas: loyalty and acceptance of others, equality, guns?, Red Bull as a sacrament?, follow your own heart,achieve enlightment.  Mercerism: empathy, community, all living things are sacred.

In journal  1) Explain how the RSA Animate film “Empathy Civilization” relates to the book?
2)  Movie to book.  Do a Venn diagram of similarities between the book and Blade Runner.
List major characters in: 1) DADoES. 2)  Another book from this class.  3) Then pick a famous person, athlete, political person, that most connects/is similar to those characters(physical resemblence and plus other similiarities and why.  This will be presented to class on Friday.

 Journal (dialectic)  Three columns.  Two questions. answer question in first column then pass to left so next person can read your answer and respond in second colum, third person in third column.

Appreciation of core values, art, values.  Choices you make.  wants, needs, personality. How you’re remembered( 1984).   Not all people are human(DADoES)  Empathy.  With whom you associate.

 Students did quarter evaluation in class.  Done by chalk talk.
1. How is the course going so far?  What changes would you like to see?   Students wrote comments on board and then Mr. Bourne went over and commented on them.
Journal entry:  How does the book DADoES fit into this course?  Dystopia, scifi, tech’s impact on society, society at war, people live on Mars, Main characters have a distaste for society, satire theme,  technology/alien. fears of the unknown, reaction to unknown is to act violently or react to it with fear.

11-01-11
 Presentations of Utopian/distopian society start today.  some students signed up yesterday to go first today.
   
   HW:
    Read pages 84-96 in DADoES.  Post vocab.  Work on Creative Project
  Thurs. quiz on vocab and reading.
10-31-11
   Journal question: Who is Buster Friendly like in our society?   And Mercer?
Buster Friendly is a dystopic Oprah (droid?).  He is like Crusty the Clown ,Marshall Applewhite, George Stropppolis, Wolf Bitzer, Sharon OsbourneBill O’Reilly< Mr. Rogers, Fox News, Steven Colbert,
Mercer(ism)  Empathy box.  More important as religious sign. Jesus/Mercer--both stood for peace and love--both suffer .
Empathy ties the whole book together.  
  HW:
     Finish creative presentation---due tomorrow.10-28-11
   Last report on Utopian Societies; New Harmony.  
Write in journal, answer the question:  Name a time when you felt different from others in a group.
 Went over answers to the post #4 on the book.
1. Why does Deckard seem to be a cold person?  because of the work he does and the uncertainty of his life hunting the androids
2. How are androids made?  A company makes them
3.  Why are they hunting androids?  Outlawed on earth but also androids wanted to take over the earth.  Android first built to help people
4.  people were leaving earth because of nucleur fallout.

Presentation of Uopian project. Platos Replublic.  Three classes; producers, auxillaries, guardians.  Metals relate to classes; gold-guardians, iron/bronze-producers, and silver-auxillaries.  The healthy city(city of pigs) producers expend to include merchants, extra wealth to guardians

  Book setting; future, post nucleur event, West Coast,
  Protagonist; Rick Deckard, android bounty hunter, applies Voigt-Kampff test ( empathy) to deterime whether it’s a person or android.

  Writing the Literary Analysis ( posted on Mr. Bournes site)
 An argument.  Usually a literary anaylsis will involve a discussion of a tesxt as writing.  in concepts.  Specific attributes of text.  Arguable point thesis about attributes.  Evidence (quotes). Supporting a thesis statement; direct quotations.  Analyze specific items, make an argument
   Integrating Quotations: never just drop a qoutation into your paper.  Use a qoute “sandwich”
 Mr. Bourne handed out “Guidelines for Writing a Literary Analysis Essay” and how to do “Qoute SAnwich”.  Will make copies for files.

Quesions:
  1.  Is the brotherhood truly good or bad?  Thinks it good but O”brien uses it as a tool against others.  Does it really exist.  Idea was that it was out to destroy the Party.

Question from post#3
   Are people of Ember suppose to be smarter than average?  is that a quality of a utopia and how everything is more advanced?  Society has both smarter and less smarter people whether they are utopian society or not.
   It say’s they will have to go down strem to get out of the city, wouldnit they want to go up stream or even up toward the surface?  Instructions, boats, direction show they go down rather than up.
   Why do Lina and Doon think its going to be easy for their families to find the way out when it took them sometime to figure it out themselves?  Doon did not write everything down.

Essay is a contrast/compare work on which ever book student is reading.
     1984/city of ember  : control of media, brain washing, lots of substance abuse, both at conflict/war, illusion of freedom, both are negative.
